Sony slams the ban-hammer down on PS3 mod chip

Remember when the new PS3 mod chip took the world by storm? OzModChips had successfully hacked the PS3 via a USB dongle, and uploaded a video to Youtube on the 18th, which went viral immediately. The chip is available online for $153.00 and people have been purchasing them left and right — but now, Sony has finally decided to slam the ban-hammer down on the new mod chip.
What the mod chip did was allow users to back up PS3 games to the hard drive, and play them without the disk. Predictably, it turns out that Sony can very easily detect a modded PS3 that’s logged into the PlayStation Network. PS3 Hax noted that the backup manager game ID can be detected by PSN, resulting in an ugly 8002A227 error code, which leads to a full-blown ban from the network, and controllers hitting the walls.
