Rumor - Multitasking coming to iPhone OS 4.0

We have been whining - about Apple refusing to implement multitasking in the iPhone (more so now, the iPad) and it should soon be coming, according to recent rumors. Remember when multitasking came out after the trusted rumors for iPhone OS 3.0? Oh yeah...

Anyways, all jokes aside, this is maybe the first solid evidence that the iPhone OS 4.0 update will be bringing multitasking to our iLives.

Even though the iPhone already "supports" some form of multitasking, such as push notifications and listening to music while playing games and surfing, it doesn't seem to be enough. Everything after the break...

I would be the first one to deny any sign of multitasking coming to the iPhone, but there is one thing that nobody can deny, or push aside, and that is a screenshot from the iPhone 3.2 SDK beta. Buried very deep inside the SDK, there is a new reference to a "multitasking dialog box" embedded in the code.

It is clear that in the near future, Apple is going to need to keep developers building on their platform, and that means making sure people get excited and interested in making Apps more versatile, which is an area where multitasking would change the face of the game. Imagine being able to talk with someone on Skype while playing a game -- maybe playing it together, on your own iPhones, across the city.

AppleInsider says that its sources say Apple has developed a “full-on-solution,” but details about how that solution will be implemented and what rules applications will need to follow to address multitasking was not revealed.

Lets all hope this works out in the end and we can finally have our multitasking, because we all know the downsides of it are slowing down your phone, crashing it and having to restart all the time -- but knowing Apple they have no margin for error. They can't afford it, they have 20+ million iPhones in peoples pockets and if anyone can revolutionize your phone with a click of a button in iTunes, its Apple (that is if you don't have to buy the new hardware to get multitasking...)
